X5 was the first retailer to sign an innovations partnership with the Skolkovo Foundation in 2017, launching the first start-ups with the Skolkovo ecosystem participants. Over the past two years, more than 100 Skolkovo start-ups presented their solutions to X5’s innovation office, with over 15 of them tested in several of the retailer's formats. X5 takes a responsible approach to partnership with start-up companies, always providing feedback and mentor support, which is very important during project evolution and business hypothesis testing.
For start-ups, this is not only a great opportunity to test hypotheses and sign first contracts, but also an excellent chance for a rapid business scale-up, as X5 has over 15,000 stores under the Pyaterochka, Perekrestok, and Karusel brands.
The consistency of the approach comes through not only in an entry point for start-ups, but also in the procedures and processed set up for them in the Company from the first meeting to the pilot project. These include simplified approval and payment procedures, tolerance when it comes to mistakes, and support from X5 staff. I believe that all of this is very important for the development of your own business. If I had to launch a start-up in retail technologies today, I would certainly start by testing hypotheses with X5.

The retail industry is quick to adapt to global and local trends. Therefore, it often serves as a testing ground for new technologies and virtual or augmented reality solutions. X5 Retail Group is the most active player in the market, always poised to introduce new innovative solutions that maximise customer experience. As part of our partnership, we are working on new seamless customer interaction scenarios before, during and after their purchase, ranging from virtual AR shelves and "stores of the future" to comprehensive loyalty programmes. Each of these projects represents an innovative product in the digital retail market.
At Intelligence Retail, we are developing a solution to monitor on-shelf availability. In late 2017, we launched a joint pilot with X5 Retail Group that ran at Perekrestok stores. The objective was to test a recognition technology for products on the shelf and assess the readiness of the existing IT infrastructure and business processes for scaling across the retail chain. Working with X5’s IT, project management and operating teams we were able to quickly adapt and improve the solution. Such joint projects are of major importance for us as they help create solutions that best meet customer needs.
Our company has been working with X5 Retail Group for over a year. During this period, our project evolved from a staff training pilot to a fundamentally new training system with real-time evaluation. The system is designed to not only train employees, but also trace their training score to performance indicators.
Our joint efforts produced quick and effective result as we created a unique EdTech solution based on virtual reality.
